Some castings are made in sand that is a mixture of:

Silica Sand
Benton (Organo Clay)
Polybutene
Alcohol

The Polybutene is used as a binder.

The advantage it has over oil is that it smokes less.

The problem is that it is difficult to buy in small quantities.

Some people use synthetic 2-stroke oil because it has some Polybutene in it.

Does anyone have any ideas where Polybutene can be purchased in 5 gallon quantities?
Or any alternatives to Polybutene that could also serve as a smokeless binder?

Any ideas how a high flash point motor oil would work?

You could use sodium silicate (sorry, I'm in a world of ash and geopolymers).

Sodium silicate, you can "harvest" from head gasket sealants, or even products like "potsil" (it's actually potassium silicate), for sealing pots or adding to soils.

I've made some decent sized batches of sodium silicate using silica gel kitty litter and lye.

Right, I use Sodium silicate for internal cores.

I am interested in the oil bonded sand to improve the reclamation of the sand and reduce the shake-out time.
