Since each wheel has an electric motor I assume it really is AWD and won't that help in harsh weather places???
I'm a journeyman semi diesel/cng mechanic at UPS. Yes, AWD will help but the tires used on semis to maximize fuel savings have a closed shoulder design and don't do very good on snow. Super single tires don't do as good on the snow as duals.
Trucks will eventually be self driven, starting first with longer interstate hauls.
The wheelbase can limit where this semi goes.
However, these new trucks have a huge upfront cost and the trucking industry is full of inexperienced drivers that are accident prone at companies such as Werner, Swift... . Companies that pay their drivers good money and have safe drivers could make use of these trucks.
