Torque Sticks go way over Spec. Feedback ?

ok using a clicker torque wrench while removing a lug nut will not tell you what torque you are at

breakaway torque is ALWAYS higher

this is why impacts always have significantly more torque in reverse than forwards

also torque sticks have a sweet spot for the gun... using a torque stick with an IR231 is usually just fine, using it with an Aircat 1150 maxed out (iirc 950ft-lbs forwards) is a bad idea

I would suspect your experience goes a long way in helping that out. Someone new to impact wrenches, let alone torque sticks, without proper instruction or supervision might go a little overboard.

Worked in a tire shop/repair shop...private owner...had torque sticks in a little kit mounted on the wall...never touched them...no one used them. You have a feel for your gun and how much to tighten...it's like a timing thing. Small cars just need less than a second, heavy trucks 8 lug 2 seconds. 1 inch gun on the tractor trailers...watch the nut as it slows down and do a count in your head, 1 thousand 1, 1 thousand 2, 1 thousand 3, move on to the next...listen to the sound of the gun. heavy equipment like front end loaders...run the gun until the nut stops moving, do them all then go around one more time. some of the equipment had 48 lugs per wheel. demounted them with a sideboom crane...most of the time changed the tire without touching the lugs, left the rim mounted...that was the easiest way to do farm tractors. 2 piece 3 piece rims were man killers. even did old split rims off work trucks in the 40's 50's, they're outlawed now but purist + collectors still use them

You use the torque wrench to make the lug budge just a little tighter. So you start less than what you think and increment 10 ft/lbs at a time. When it moves before clicking you have the torque.
