Dear all,

I am just about to buy new Legacy 3.6. I have read on the forum that Subaru uses re branded Idemitsu 5w-30 oil. I was wondering if there are any more generally available alternatives.

Kind regards,
Boris

If you want to know which oil to use, first of all check your owners handbook for the required API group and SAE limits, then look at the oil finder or oil guide page of the engine oil company.
This is the oil finder page for Mobil:
https://mobiloil.com/en/product-selector

All major brand engine oil companies have such an oil selection page on their web sites and it's a real good idea to check that any recommendations from forum members agree with those from the oil companies.
Some oil finders only list the best oil, when other products from the same company would be also be suitable. The best oil finders, like the Liqui Moly one, list all of the oils:
http://www.liqui-moly.com/liquimoly/web.nsf/id/pa_eng_oil_guide.html

If you are buying a new car with an extended warranty that allows you to do your own oil changes, make sure you read all the terms and conditions.

The 3.6 will accept just about anything SN 5w30. Conventional, Blend, or Syn, it is easy on all. Pick what you want as the choice is only about how frequently you want to change your oil. Conventional should be good for about 5K, Blend should be good for 7.5K, and Syn for 7.5K+ depending if it is "Regular" Syn or "Extended" Syn. Just follow your owners manual as the extended drain intervals could run you afoul with SoA... but they are normally not so picky.

I run NAPA Syn in my 2.5 because it requires 0w20 and Napa will put its 0w20 on sale for $3.50/qt. Other than that, I tend to run Havoline.

Idemitsu is a good oil but not good for the Subaru dealer price.
