I'm buying my nephew an oil and filter gift.
I read that the 5.3L takes 8.5 qts. and they recommend Dexos 0w20 oil.
He told me different...... Truck is bone stock
Anyone know. Thanks!

Thank you Sir!!!
This was interesting

Notice the V6 recommendation....

Because the engine is not the same?..... They increase the sump size and in the race for fuel economy they changed to 0w-20.

The 2014 and newer 4.3 V6, 5.3 & 6.2L V8s are Ecotech 3s.
The proper engine oil level cold is on the full line when hot.
Some Canadian dealerships were installing 8 liters, which is 1/2 qt. over when cold.
Again, playing musical viscosity, will not likely change the oil pressure with these engines.

I would add a catch can if I was him, I am at 5,400 miles on my Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and just added 1/2 of a quart but that is the same amount caught by my Elite can. I could not imagine 1/2 of a quart of oil sucked down the intake of a engine that is DI. Those poor intake valves!!!!

8 quarts only, 8.5 would be overfull. I'd go with either Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum, both are Dexos compliant and the engine will love them.
