CAFE standards are continually being tightened along with ever increasing safety regulations and you get cars that have to be lighter with more "extras" attached.

Wonder why there is so much plastic, thin body panels, aerodynamics is king, junk water based paint, lack of space to work engineering going on? Look to Washington.

The more universal regulations that get piled onto manufactures there are, the more cars will look universal.
