The owner's "oil light" came on (level low) with the message to "add 1.25L of oil"...vehicle came with 1L (Castrol) in a compartment, a carboard funnel and a pair of gloves. Light came on at just over 14,000km into it's second 15,000km service.

Thanks Shannow, it's always good to see another car's OM.

I must admit, I don't know much about VW oil specs, if anybody has the time to educate me some.

I know my regular full SAPS A3/B4 oils are often rated VW 502.00 / 505.00.
I've seen 505.00 / 505.01 on Mid SAPS oils, and I assume 504.00 / 507.00 is Low SAPS.

Probably there is a bit more to it than that.

Boy, that last sentence can be read wrong in so many ways:

Quote:
Engine oils compliant with VW 504 00 and VW 507 00 are therefore unsuitable in a large number of markets.

I'm guessing it's because of the flexible oil change service. It assumes high quality oil and high quality fuel. Subtract one and the OLM shouldn't be trusted.

Yup. VW 504.00 / 507.00 oils are typically mid/low SAPS oils so that they can be safely used in modern diesel engines. But unless you use ultra low sulfur fuel, these oils don't handle extended OCIs very well.
