Ford Powershift Gearbox Class Action (Oz)

My buddies 2014 focus has a constant shutter when accelerating. The dealership extended his warranty on the trans from 60k to 100k but won't do anything else unless the trans fails or throws a code. They have the new clutch packs to fix the issue but Ford won't pay for it without the trouble codes being thrown. Apparently the seals are defective allowing small amounts of fluid to come in contact with the clutches causing the slipping, is what the Ford tech told him.

I had a Focus SE rental that had terrible transmission shutters and the car only had 5000 miles.

Great car and I would buy it with a manual transmission.

Yup, tons of issues. We finally got clutches in stock, they were on a 8-12 week backorder from the day we ordered. Even then they usually took 5-6 months to come in.

bdcardinal, are new clutches a long term fix, or does the same problem reoccur? A friend has a 2014 Focus which is going in shortly for a warranty repair on the PowerShift...she traded a Golf with a dodgy DSG for the Focus 12 months ago. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire! By the time I found out what she'd bought, it was too late to back out of the deal, otherwise I'd have done my best to talk her out of it.

New ones still go bad. My boss's daughter totalled his 2012 Focus that was on its 3rd clutch. He bought a 2016 Focus and it does the same thing, and it has the latest clutch and calibration.

So you are basically telling me I'm screwed lol

Clutches were just replaced at 52k...

2013 Ford Fiesta

The whole thing is a giant cluster. Getrag made the gearboxes and Luk made the clutches. they are pointing fingers at eachother while customers have to wait for production to be ramped up to meet demand.

They've ditched the DCT in the Australian Focus, now comes with a conventional 6 speed auto. Can't believe they'd change it in a tiny market like ours, yet keep selling the DCT in the US. Focus isn't even a very popular vehicle here, it rarely if ever makes it into the top 20.

They may be using Australia as a test to see if this 6 speed auto transmission works good in this car.

I pushed FoMoCo to replace mine ahead of the dealers schedule. I waited 2 1/2 months and it was just getting worse. If you tried to pull out into traffic it would fall on it's sword quickly.

I never trusted Luk clutches in my VW, more of Sachs fan.

I'd recommend a F4EAT instead.

Ugh. No thanks. Wife had a 98 Escort with that box and it never shifted right, even after the dealer rebuilt it after they let it out of the shop with a loose cooler line and we toasted it on the way back.

Is it a CAFE phenomenon ?

Ford rep seems to mislead public by claiming a Dual Clutch trans as a 'powershift'.

When they work good they have advantages

The ford model is the worst.

Some other brands like VW have MUCH better ones.

Kind of like how Subaru has the best CVT
and Nissan has tons of cvt issues

I would prefer an auto with TC that just kept it locked over 10mph... to DCT
