There should be a fill hole on the case of the transmission. For most units, the plug is the same size as the drain plug, and the fluid level should reach that hole - fill it until it starts to drip, and you're golden. Double-check the manufacturer's recommendation to be sure.

In general, get it up on a lift or on stands but be SURE the car is level.

Leave the drain plug in, and take out the weep hole plug that is higher up.

Stick your finger in there, if you touch oil you are good.

To be 100% sure, add a bit until it dribbles out of the weep hole.

I think some may have a dip stick!

dam! this look complicated. i know on big rig we used to check diff oil with finger( bad idea) and the the proper way is to fill it from the top till the weep hole thread have a bit of oil on it ,but since the official weep hole isnt marked usually andi dont want to unscrew a plug that actually is used to contrrol oil pressure i was trying to get precision!

Some Ford Lasers (Escort in the US?) used to be filled through the speedo drive hole - undo a 10mm bolt, pull the speedo drive out, look down the hole, if the drive gear was covered with oil it was good, otherwise top up.
