I bought a 1998 Honda Civic sedan with D14A4 engine (1.4 90 hp, 16 valve SOHC). It has only 114 000 kilometers and 10W40 in sump (previously 5W30 A3/B4, 5W40 and once even 10W60!). No visible sludge under the cap, no oil consumption, works perfectly. Because this car is going to be extreme short tripper, I'm considering 0W20 or thin A5/B5 0W30. The cheapest option here in Poland would be Mobil1 0W40 (still the old one). Manual calls for 5W30, but Honda in Japan used 5W20 since 1996. So what to do? I'm not going to rev this engine up to redline (set at 7000 rpm), just extreme short tripping rarely over 3000 rpm.

We had a 1998 Civic EX and all I used was any brand 5w30 Dino, gave it to my nephew with 200K miles and was running just fine.

ZERO need for synthetic oil in your Civic.
