This is the latest from my XC70.
2004 XC70 with 115,000 total miles.
Mobil 1 0w40
5,000 miles on this oil.

The below are old postings from several samples using German Castrol. The two numbers on the far right of each element are from the last UOA at 105,000 miles(first number) and this sample at 115,000 miles. Both are Mobil 1 0w40. Decided to change to M1 because GC was getting hard to find and very expensive!

Latest UOA on my 2004 Volvo xc70. Just hit 85,000 miles and the car and engine are both running well. Only problem is fuel was 1.5 and I'm not sure how it is getting in the oil. Also found some black carbon looking stuff in the filter. It looks and feels like the edge of a burned hamburger that got burned to much(hard bits of carbon?) See pictures below.

German Castrol 0w30
5,000 miles on oil, 85,000 on engine.
OEM oil and air filters used. Current air filter has 20,000 miles on it.

1st number is Castrol GTX and Auto RX when car had 49,775 miles(2,500 miles on oil). 2nd number is GTX and Auto RX at 52,820 miles(3,000 miles on oil). 3rd is GTX and 58,000/3,000 miles. 4th is German Castrol at 61,000 miles/3,000 miles. And the 5th number is this OCI using German Castrol at 65,000/4,000 miles total. 6th number is GC at 70,000/5,000 miles, 7th number is GC at 75,000/5,000 miles, 8th number is 80,000 miles and 5,000 miles on the oil and the 9th colum is this sample at 85,000 total miles:

The oil used for the far right (M1 I think) looks like a better mix than the others, BUT
the Copper is trending up. Might just be from an oil cooler joint, but the bearings in the turbo contain Cu. Not high enough to be of real concern, but a trend is a trend.

The insolubles have trended down to a nice low figure and when you look at all the other low figures, I would say there is no reason to be doing such a short OCI. The OCI in the EU is probably at least 15,000 miles. So, try 10,000 miles and report back.
The Cu might just be because the M1 has a lot of active detergent (Mostly Ca based) dissolving part of a Copper pipe at the joiner or brazed weld. If it gets above 10 in 5K that is more significant, as the turbo might be the culprit. Cu is a soft metal with an oil condemnation of over 100 ppm.

PS: This forum is in deline in post rate terms, cos there is no easy way of posting Pic's.

Also curious to know if this was the new "FS" formula or the old one. I've been waiting patiently to see how the new oil performs before deciding if I want to continue using it or switch to a different 0w40
