Any difference if I replace a vacuum hose for a brake booster on a 1988 Toyota pickup with a hose for col lent or some other use...Fuel etc.
 
The brake booster sees a vacuum, coolant sees pressure. Try the hose and see if it collapses from engine vacuum. If it doesn't you're good to go.
 
I'm surprised that the old hose went bad.

Most hoses with the correct inner diameter should work. Perhaps a piece of bulk fuel hose is your best bet because brake-booster hoses are usually sturdy and of similar diameter. Coolant hoses may be too thin and collapse under vacuum as others said.
