Normally I think the oils "Vollsyntetische" under german law are better for carrying a higher percentage of PAO and being Group IV.

I use Motul Specific dexos2 5W30 because it is "Vollsyntetische" but I was interested in the Shell Helix Ultra AG 5W-30 Professional

http://www.shell.de/products-services/on...ro-ag-5w30.html "Motorenöl auf Basis von Synthesetechnologie" that is not 100% synthetic under German law.

I get susprised because is comparing both I think, by numbers, the better is the Shell. There are not very distinguishing figures in their technical reports but it has caught my attention because I expected better results in the french oil than the dutch one.

Is there any expert who can tell me which is better? Or maybe one is it better in terms of protection and the other in terms of longevity or cleansing?

shell seems to be a lot less dense at 15c compared to the motul.

Does the Euro Dexos 2 spec also cover the North American Dexos 1 spec, even though you 'Continentals' don't have to worry about that??

No, they are two separate specifications, technically. The dexos2 stuff won't be resource conserving, whereas the dexos1 stuff will be, for one. The dexos2 examples I've seen have been SN as well, though, just not GF-5.

Ironically, Castrol Canada states that black bottle Edge 5w-30 dexos1 and gold bottle Edge 5w-30 dexos1 and gold bottle Edge 5w-30 C3 dexos2 are all suitable for my G37. It technically calls for an SM or newer 5w-30, not necessarily a GF-4 or newer 5w-30. So, I can use dexos1 or dexos2 5w-30 options, something that wouldn't be "normal" in GM land.

As for overseas people, I don't like to speak for the guy, but I'm fairly certain that Doug Hillary uses M1 5w-30 dexos1 in his Cruze.

It doesn't really "cover" dexos1 as the specs are different in some areas (eg dex2 is 3.5 min HTHS and 0.8% max ash vs dex1 at 2.3/2.6/2.9 HTHS, 1.0% ash). There are some differences in engine testing as well.

However, in Europe dexos2 is deployed as a mixed fleet oil, for both engine types, whereas dexos1 is a purely gasoline spec. Hence we don't really see any dexos1 over here, and you don't see much dexos2 over there.

And last time I checked, North America was a continent too.

Yes, it most definitely is.

I was just being a little bit snide using the term many Americans use for those residing in Europe.

BTW; THANKS to everyone above for the Dexos 2 vs 1 explanations.

Thanks

Been using Helix Ultra 'AG' and 'ECT C3' both carry DEXOS2 spec in my Saab 9-5 turbo. very happy with them both. Tech sheets look the same, jsut depends on the price / sales. Much cheaper than Motel, at least in Australia.
