Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans who are threatening the ability of Earth to sustain life, a sobering new study reports.

The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.

“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists who contributed to the study, said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”

More worryingly, Logsdon said, “As facts have multiplied, their defenses against those facts have only grown more powerful.”

While scientists have no clear understanding of the mechanisms that prevent the fact-resistant humans from absorbing data, they theorize that the strain may have developed the ability to intercept and discard information en route from the auditory nerve to the brain. “The normal functions of human consciousness have been completely nullified,” Logsdon said.

While reaffirming the gloomy assessments of the study, Logsdon held out hope that the threat of fact-resistant humans could be mitigated in the future. “Our research is very preliminary, but it’s possible that they will become more receptive to facts once they are in an environment without food, water, or oxygen,” he said.

Well thank goodness I'm not one of those. I can remember hearing my Mom saying right now to never argue with an idiot....
In before the lock with bullwinkle's opening salvo....

Now I have a much better understanding of the far right and the far left. What do the rest of us centrist leaning fold to do??

Might have been a little bit entertaining, til it took that deadly turn in the last sentence.

I'd be interested in what these "facts" are that the author is so concerned about, though I have my suspicions.

In grade school, we were taught the "scientific fact" that the coelecanth was a primitive extinct fish that died out as more advanced fish took over in the evolutionary chain.

Being a coffee drinker, I've followed news stories having to do with coffee and caffeine over several decades. I've seen studies "proving" that one or the other contributes to cancer, and that they may prevent cancer. Coconut oil used to be held up as the unhealthiest of oils, and now it's sold in the health food stores. Again, "science" is telling us these things.

In our own country, the worldwide bastion of Freedom of Speech, there are many who are calling for criminalization of the disagreement with certain scientific "facts".

The author of the editorial in the OP is merely saying, as many have throughout the ages, that he is the sole repository of truth, and that those who disagree with his viewpoints are either stupid, or, for some pathological reason, unwilling to accept that truth.

Things sold in health food stores are marketed as healthy, regardless of whether zero studies, one small study or many larger studies prove their efficacy.

Add into the mix the fact that we're a BREAKING NEWS!!!/NEWS ALERT!!!/ETC type of nation, many are more than willing to jump on one little trickle of truth in order to sell something to the masses, especially if OVER consumption will also have zero longer-term negative effects (think juice cleanses.)

LOL, and drugs sold and advertised in your evening news nearly never treate that disease, just the symptoms, and much of the time are less than 50% effective at doing THAT.

AND the side effects are often worse than the original condition.

Skin rash? Use this pill. Side effects include death.

I've noticed that a lot of the drug commercials are putting the side effects bit right in the middle of the commercial now. I always pay attention to those, because they're so interesting and scary.
