Switching to a thinner oil

Can't argue with success. I am in staying with what you have been using camp and changing at 5K miles.

You didn't mention what your maintenance of your coolant system has been. Could be that your heater core is partially clogged or your thermostat needs replacing.

There are some threads about flushing heater cores on youtube and a thermostat replacement at 300K miles wouldn't be a bad idea and pretty inexpensive.

I was thinking it was too long a warm up he was describing. You are right, he needs to see if the thermostat is stuck open.

Similar Toyota engine, same climate, I idle 30-60 secs. before starting, keep it under 2k or so rpms until water temp is getting towards normal zone. Even in winter I have heat and am at "operating temp" in a few miles. His sounds un-Japanese like IME.

5w30 Valvoline MaxLife Full Syn
Fram Ultra XG3600
Toyota Red coolant flush with distilled water
Toyota OEM thermostat
New radiator hoses (if necessary)
