Half an Oil Change?

I just did UOA and got my report. I would post it, but BITOG doesn't accommodate posting pdf files, and I'm too lazy to manually enter all the data. Getting to the point, my particle count is 14/13/11 compared to my baseline sample of new oil having 17/16/13; so my oil is about 8 times as clean as new oil, all of my wear metals look excellent and my TBN is well within limits...

However, I don't think my air filter is as good as my oil filtration; I've got 30 ppm silicon. (Blackstone and other labs start caution at about 20 ppm Si.). Since I've run the oil only 8K, I've used (and drawn out samples) consisting of almost half a quart. I've got a valve mounted inline to draw samples from, so, I thought, why not "bleed" off a quart and top up with new oil? This should slightly lower my silicon count and raise my TBN.

Having already done this, I ended up topping up 2 new quarts and I'm now 100% full on a 5 quart system. Anybody ever heard of half an oil change? Thoughts? Comments? Why did I save HALF my oil? Answer: Because it's much cleaner by particle count than what comes out of the bottle as new.

Yes, but let's see what happens in the next several thousand miles. I do not leak or burn oil and now have clinically clean oil.

Surely you jest. No one at a quick lube will touch my vehicle. You can do what you wish, and I'll do as I please. Thank you. BTW, try to find anyone at any "quick lube" that has even heard of ISO 4406.

The oil in my car with 8K on it is cleaner than any oil in any car on a dealer lot.

also bitog encourages posting the UOA as a CODE so its still here in 5 years as pictures seem to come and go. Takes aprox 2min.

I have my testing done at Oil Analysers; they do not provide Insolubles, Flashpoint or SUS VIS 210F; but I do have particle counting done.

Edit: this is not at all what I posted; nor did it come out worth a ****. I tried.

Earlye, Thanks for the insults and no help. I did what you suggested and got nowhere. Good thing I'm doing my UOA for my own info and not to impress strangers.

If your using Windows, open the PDF, use the snipping tool cut the data you want from the pdf and paste into paint. Then save as a JPEG and post that.

mk378, Thank you so kindly. JC1, my temporary problem is that the pdf file sent to me from the lab is SECURED and I can't do anything with it other than read it. When I get the same info from them thru the snail mail, I will scan it into a pdf and attempt what you suggest. For now, thanks.

Doing have an oil change is okay as long as you only drain out the dirtier half of your oil the next time you do another half oil change. That way you'll always have half the oil as clean oil and only the other half will be dirty oil. It's called progressive maintenance just like they do in the airline industry. They can't afford the down time to do everything at once so they do a little bit on every turn around. Just be careful to only drain out the dirty half of your oil then everything will be okay.

Sure, even a brand new one.

Stop driving on dirt roads. Just fooling. You may want to closely check out the intake tupper wear for leaks. If satisfied it is tight, search for a better air filter

That's probably not too far from the truth.
