Search feature; I only want individual threads

My Stuff > Edit Preferences > Topic Display Mode

Change to "Threaded Mode".

Oops. I missed that the OP was asking about the SEARCH (even though his Subject line starts with that...).

I second the Google recommendation. Google search is better than most websites' own internal search.
