Yea, that's what I was trying to say too, really it depends on what limits the down travel.
If it's the upper arm (like on older GM's) then the upper ball joint will still be under tension with no jack under the lower arm.
If its the shock / strut assy attached to the lower arm, then the ball joint would not be under tension without a jack under the lower arm.
