I thought I could use it in place of 75w90 gear oil but, reading about it on Mobil's site, it doesn't look like it's meant for it.

Has anyone used it for gear oil?
 
We used it in Philadelphia triple reduction gear reducers used on B&W MPS 89 coal pulverizers. It's been almost two decades but I recall they had a capacity of 400 gallons.
 
That's the recommended gearbox oil for Haas Automation Lathes , Mills , rotaries and trunnions.

I do remember there are (automotive) OEM manufacturers recommending Mobil SCH oils for axle use ..... can't find the link though.
