As an ex-lab worker I can tell you that both will dissolve your trousers (pants in American) if they are cotton, alkali more so than acid. Lower strengths, this might not be apparent until they come out of the wash.
Fortunately I have no first hand experience of effects on pants in English (shorts in American)
Alkalis feel soapy, acids don't. If they're strong you can give yourself very nasty burns with either. Do not [censored] about.
