It's been 4.5yrs since my last UOA on the 3.0L V6 Fusion... so I figured it was due.

I even opted to pull a TBN & TAN reading just to see how the Ultra held up over the 7.5k run. Oil was in use for approx 10mo... with the car driven by my wife. Generally twice a week the car will get a good highway run. We've owned the car since 2010... and have run Pennzoil Ultra (now Ultra Platinum) for approx the past 30k. I've had no engine issues to speak of... and have always had routine maintenance done. The 3.0L may not get the best fuel economy in the world compared to many of the new motors, but it's super reliable and appears to also be super low wearing in my case as well. I hope to get many more years out of it!

Thick oil guys, where's the wear metals you often speak of with 20Wt. oils? Nice report for a great engine.

That's a great wearing engine. A lot of people, including myself, like to change oil when the tbn and tan cross over. You are there and I believe is the sweet spot for a change. Yes you could extend a bit farther, but why? You said you want this car to last a very long time so once a year looks perfect with this oil.

Thanks for posting this UOA. It is of interest to me because I have 5 - 5 qt containers of this same, Pennzoil Ultra 5W20, API SN, GF-5 to use up, beginning this spring. In my case, it will be going in a 2004 Ford Focus (2.3L Duratec) & a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

The questions, I have are these:

1) Given the 3.6 TBA in this UOA, what is the maximum odometer mileage you would take this oil - 10,000 miles? 12,000 miles?

2) Is this older version of Pennzoil Ultra, (the API SN one with the "Hyper Cleaning Technology" on the front), also a GTL oil?

3) In what way is the current Pennzoil Ultra Platinum an upgrade, to the older version (with the low 5.0 NOACK for the 5W20)?

1. I agree with a previous poster that stated "change the oil when the TBN & TAN get close to crossing over each other"... which means that I'm completely happy with my choice to change at 7500mi. Your vehicle may be different than mine however - it may go longer... it may not... but for me 7500mi seems to be the sweet spot.

2. Yes, this was my last OCI of the older bottling for Pennzoil Ultra (before Ultra Platinum). What's in there now is the Ultra Platinum version... which from what I understand is the same stuff.

3. Most people agree that the previous NOACK was a typo. Pennzoil even pulled their data sheets from their website not long after posting the 5.0 NOACK. GTL base stocks have inherently good NOACK values, but I can't see the finished product being that low.

tig1 I had a 08 Ford Fusion that took 5w20 as you well know. I ran Castrol w titanium gold bottle, Valvoline, and Pennzoil Ultra in it. It ran great on those 20s. Quiet as well.
