This info is on my Mercury 4 stroke 60hp 2011 model. I have always changed the oil out early as the oil starts rising on the stick and making oil. This is the first time I have tried an oil that is not marine specific. I only used it because I change so often. I am not recommending the use of non marine oil but just wanted to share the information.

I always run below the dam where the water temp is in the 50's. I also don't think the rings were set right. I bought the engine new but after 2 minutes the engine shut down due to a wiring harness. When I got the engine back it had 3 hours on it and I suspect it was idling in a tank to make sure the new harness was good. I have always thought this affected the rings seating properly.

Comments from last oil analysis.

This sample is Delo 15W-40 LE. The additives in this oil are different from the marine oils you used before, but it did a good job for you just the same. Fuel at 3.0 is worth noting, and it's probably why the viscosity is thin.
Hopefully it will correct itself next time. Silicon is likely harmless, but inspect the air intake in case it's dirt.

1.Delo LE 15W40 19 hours on oil 359 on engine
2. New Mercury 25w40 syn blend 36 hours on oil and 260 on engine
3. Amsoil WCF 10w40 25 hours on oil and 108 on engine
4. Old Mercury 25w40 syn blend 20 hours on oil and 51 on engine

I doubt 3 hours of idling affected the long term seating of your rings. If anything, it just delayed it a bit. As far as this analysis, seems like it doesn't matter what you are running there.

Thanks for posting, it's good to see an outboard oil analysis. As mentioned earlier, all the oils seem to have similar results for the hours you are running.

I'm just over 50 hours on my Mercury 25HP 4-stroke (2011). I'm running Amsoil 10w30 Signature series and will do a UOA when I pull the boat for the season (end of October). I'll post my results in this section also.

If that is Amsoil AME, I think I'd stick with the Amsoil with it's high levels of Calcium for lower TAN and higher TBN.

I bet if he runs it hard they will seal, if he keeps it up he could start making oil. Google 4 stroke outboards making oil during break in

Glad to see the results. I am running the Shell Rotella 15/40 in my late model Mercury 50HP 4 stroke. I did run it fairly hard after the first hour. Changed out the FF at about 20hrs. and now have about 40hrs.

Engine used just under half a qt during the first 20 hrs. Now has used none during the last 20hrs.

I am running the Delo 15/40 you reference in my Hustler ZTR 23 Kawasaki.

Now at 435 hours. I adjusted the valves and changed the oil. My engine continues to make oil. I have changed fuel pumps and thermostats, run quickleen every tank, and decarbed twice. Nothing seems to help. I run at 6000 rpm everywhere I go. At the Mercury shop on computer they commented at how much I run it wide open or idle. That was the reason for switching to cheaper oil. I have read for hours on making oil and nothing helps. I just live with it.

Most people want to assume I am doing something wrong and it is not the motors fault. I just live with that too.

If your oil level is good for 20 hours you are good to go. Enjoy.

If you read on thehulltruth.com you will read about 4 strokes making oil and sometimes they just need to have new rings installed and broken in old school
