Have primarily used Schaeffer 700 15w40 syn blend in this pre-egr, factory rebuilt Detroit 60 12.7L. Thru the prodding of my Schaeffer rep, I decided to try the 711 10w30 syn blend. Was a little leery with the engine getting close to 500K miles on it. But, I gave it a shot. Not too bad of results. Numbers very close to the previous 15w40 numbers on multiple samples, except, this one shows the 711 has some pretty good levels of Zinc, Phos, Calcium, etc. More than their 15w40, and I didn't lose nearly as much TBN. Used the same amount of oil, about 2 qts over the 20K miles. Sump capacity 9.5 gallons.

Well, I took this sample at the oil change. Detroit recommends 15K oil changes, I have generally been doing 20K. Will take the next one further and see what happens. For a factory remanned motor, this one has been one of the best heavy diesels I have owned in over 3 decades. A real keeper. And it seems to like the 10w30. A lot of folks told me I was nuts for not continuing to use 15w40.

Hey TT,
That 711 10w30 looks like a stout oil. I bought a 5 gallon pail last year but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Thanks for posting the UOA. :--)

Excellent results. If you don't have one already, invest in a vacuum sampler so you can just sample the oil and change it when the lab says it is time. I will not be surprised if you can double your drain interval.
