I'm sure folks will be along shortly to advise us that there have been no documented engine failures due to gaping holes in filter media, and that miraculously, the majority of the oil is still being filtered rather than flowing through the gap.

Use with confidence.

I have been using MC filters for many years with good results. Makes me wonder why someone would take a NEW filter and cut it apart to see if it is defective. OCD maybe, but how can you trust any filter without cutting it apart first, then what do you have?

Wow, I'm quite disappointed by the responses here.
I saw someone posted FL820S cut open with not so good quality so, I thought I would open up one of my FL400S I have been using on my car and my riding mower.
BTW, I have FL400s still on my car and mower and won't pull them out until next oil change
I didn't expect this kind of firestorm again my first post.

Looks like I will be using something else in my Escort when I change it next! I was hoping that these filters would still be good since I kind of liked that they were a little shorter.

WOW .. Too bad the Fram xg-2 is a little on the longer side because i would definitely be using the ultra on my moms Mercury Grand Marquis like i am doing with most of my other vehicles problem is there is almost no room to maneuver the filter so i am stuck with a Motorcraft built by tearolater.

I supposed I could simply remove my power steering (depower the rack) and free up room for a longer oil filter like that. I have power steering hoses getting in my way when I change my oil filter.

You could use the Ultra in the 3614 size instead.

Try a remote filter setup with the filter mounted base up. That makes the ABV unimportant.

I was thinking of removing my radiator so I could use a longer filter.

"I was thinking of removing my radiator so I could use a longer filter."

Nah...you will need the radiator to keep the engine from overheating in the summertime. Just cut a hole in the radiator with a hole saw. LOL
