The two Fords in my signature both take the Fram Ultra XG-2. I changed both filters last weekend and had a bugger of a time getting them off. I did get them off but it took way longer than it should have. They are stuck up in the engine whereby the regular oil filter wrench I use doesn't have enough room. I need a cap style that goes over the end.....something I can put on the end of a ratchet and extension, gently turn it and viola, its loose. I bought one cap style but it is really shallow, didn't grip well and didn't really fit over the black grip stuff on the end of the filter. Basically it was worthless and got tossed in a box in my garage. What do you guys use to get a filter that size off?

Fram lists the diameter of the filter as 3.66".

TIA for the information

I would find a cap style that exactly fits the fluting of the filter you use. Different brands may have different fluting. Bring a new filter when wrench shopping. I have a large box of filter wrenches starting in 1976.

If it is a tight place, I've used a length of bicycle inner tube wrapped around the filter and then wrapped again around a socket on an extension. The friction starts the tube winding up on the socket and then puts pressure in the same direction on the filter. It takes patience and you have to let the pressure work for you, but it will slowly work the filter to where it is loose. It basically works like a strap wrench.

When it came time to change the oil in my daughter's 2016 Ford Fiesta for the first time, I had to buy this to get it off:

I use the smaller Lisle 63600 for my Toyota and Honda, and it has never failed me. These are better than a cap wrench, because you don't need to have any particular size - they're universal (within a certain range).

I thought I was the only one with overly tight Fram Ultras. This tool saved me on the Escalade when no other other tool would. The 6.0 design has the filter snug against a oil pan heat shield. And the sure grip causes regular cap types to slip. I think the one I bought was made by Fram but not positive. Was on the shelf locally

I've been using a Lisle 63600 for 20 years. It takes off every single filter, no problem. Super tight filters dont even think about standing a chance, and it is adjustable so it fits a large variety of filters. This will fit 90% of the cars on the road today, and I'm 100% sure you will love this tool. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Its the best oil filter wrench on the market.

If you need a filter wrench, it's on too tight. That said, you can get the jobber version of the Ultra on eBay. Search for Fram FPS2

3.66 inches + 93mm cap wrench. As said take your filter to NAPA or AP and find the correct cap wrench with a 3/8 inch square for a ratchet. Ed
