We have a Stemme S-10 with the 115HP, 1200cc, turbocharged Rotax 914 engine. It works hard launching our glider and has a 5 minute take off limit of 115HP. Then power must be reduced to 100HP.

This is an interesting engine and it has some interesting requirements.

It requires 91 (R+M) / 2 octane unleaded without ethanol. So 90 octane "rec" fuel won't work. I use 96 octane VP C-9 fuel. While it's OK to use 100LL, they strongly recommend that it's not be used. Due to corrosion, deposits, shorter engine life and oil issues.

It also requires a semi or full synthetic "motorcycle" oil with GL5 or similar rating for gears. Mobil 1, 10W-40 and 20W-50 syn motorcyle oils are at the top of the list of recommended oils!

Does it feature the turbo only for max take off power or is the engine also turbo normalized for sea level power in the flight levels?

The turbo is in play at any normal cruise power setting. While the glider may remain aloft with manifold pressure lower than 30 inches, it certainly won't climb well. It is a tiny engine after all.

Typical takeoff manifold pressure is 40 inches and we normally see 35 inches in cruise.

Correction: Motorcycle oil with GL4 or GL5

Nah, it's a purpose-built aviation engine, though Rotax does make engines for motorcycles, sleds & jet skis.

This is a 4-cylinder opposed engine with liquid cooling of the cylinder heads only.
