I'm currently running 5w30 in my 5.0 F150 specified for 5w20, no changes noted and I'll likely be trying 0w40 down the road.

Causing excessive engine wear is often hard to feel.

what would be causing excessive wear ?

If they are super-cheap, 10w-30 might save them a nickel a quart. Using a cheapest possible 5w-30 with the Ford WSS spec attached means those new Ecoboost engines would be covered by warranty in case turbo bearings or any other bearing blew.
