The fleet where I work consists of several gm pick ups, 6 and 8 cylinders, 4.3s,4.8s and a lone 6.0 in 2001-2013's. A 5.4 liter econoline van, a 2009 escape 4 cyl., a 2014 3.5l explorer, 2010-2014 f150's 3.7s and 5.4s. A few 2001 and 2002 dodge 1500's 5.2s and 4.7s and one 2013 ram 4.7l. We also maintain various 4 cycle small engines, mostly kohler command twins, a few Briggs vangard twins, a Honda gx620? and and Kawasaki 18 hp twin.
We generally run 5k mile oci's but idling time is excessive. We're in south Louisiana so cold is not an issue.(was 79 degrees today) We've been running a local distributors label 10w30 conventional bulk in everything with a Napa gold filter. We usually phase our trucks out at 125-150 k unless something helps them along before then. We are getting 8 new f150's with the small ecoboost v6 tomorrow and I never really liked running the 10w30 in the 5-20 fords but with these new turbo trucks I like it less. Synthetics are not likely an option and I doubt they'll spring for any brand names either. Is there a better weight we could be using or stick to the 10w30?

If you only keep cars till 150k mi run any cheapest api SF snd later oils. Especially at 5k oci. 10w30 would be my choice.

EcoBoost calls for 5W-30, so the 10W-30 will still be fine. I think 5W-30 or 10W-30 is the perfect weight all across the line for all the vehicles. Keep doing what you're doing.

I've nothing against the 10w30. Just thought it might be a little heavy for the 5w20 fords we've got and maybe there was a better option.
I knew the 3.5 EB's ran 5w30, I don't know much about the 2.7's.
I wish I could convince them to spring for the Rotella.

2.7 also specified for 5w30.

I'm currently running 5w30 in my 5.0 F150 specified for 5w20, no changes noted and I'll likely be trying 0w40 down the road.

With your temps down in FL the difference between 5w and 10w seems like it would be negligible. The 10w would be a little thicker at startup, IF ... it was cold enough.

On your stuff under new warranty, be careful. Ford could deny coverage if something happened and caught you using a non-speced 10w-30. Needs a 5w-30 that gets Ford WSS-M2C946-A spec.
Everything else can use 10w-30 off-warranty, cheapest SN stuff you can get your crawdad claws on.....

Thanks for everyone's input. They're paying about $1.25 a quart for the bulk oil now, I imagine they would stick to it if switching cost any more.

We had one 3.7 that had a rear main seal fail under warranty. Our dealer didn't ask about oil.
These turbos are more complex and no doubt more expensive to repair so they may look a little harder for reasons to avoid picking up the tab

I'd look at the bulk price on Castrol GTX 5W-30 and, if affordable, run it in everything

You could maybe save a buck or two on your filters if you buy the WIX white cans at O'Rielly's (WIX make Napa Gold). If you buy in quantity they might beat Napa's prices ...

The 10w30 will work fine in a Xw-30 vehicle in the south. You don't need a HDEO

Only if ford can prove the other than 5w-30 oil caused the problem. I called the factory.

Causing excessive engine wear is often hard to feel.

Extra wear?

The 10,30 will be fine a 15,40 will also be fine. I wouldn't go below a 30 but ymmv. The fleet I work on was only 15,40 when I started and Their rigs are still doing great even the Fords. Its more about service interval than anything.

Why not just buy bulk 5w30. 5w30 would fit, so would 10w30. Don't buy into all the hype. I have three Fords that are speced for 5w20. I've used 10w30 lots and with not the slightest issue.

There will be UOAs along the way, never fear - testing 5w30, 5w20, and 0w40 in that order at 10k OCI. Stay tuned...
