I would do a full rebuild before doing anything like that. I reject the idea of putting an engine "out to pasture" just because it has some miles on it. Perhaps it's a result of working in Aerospace, but I like engines in tune, well maintained, and internally clean enough to eat off of. (Admittedly that last one is a tall order on a old engine)
