1- Know the equipment
2- Read equipment specifications
3- Assess the lubricant
4- Understand oil analysis testing
5- Sample carefully
6- Start logging operation time and fluid time
7- Establish baseline trends
 
This should almost be a sticky, given some of the rubbish that's been posted in response to various UOAs these days. Either that, or the authors should revise their advice by lowering the numbers dramatically and making Step 1 to change oil brands the second you have a "weird" number of any sort, be it TBN, metals, additives, or viscosity. Obviously, Step 7 would have to disappear.
