Purchased the car in August. It's a 2014 Mazda 5 van with 2.5L engine and 5-speed A/T. Dealer claims to have changed oil at 30,600 miles in June with 0w-20 synthetic (don't know brand). I figured I'd change it at 34K just in case besides it's close to OM interval in terms of time. Everything looks good per Titan Labs. Poured in M1 0w-20 EP and installed Wix filter.

I should have analyzed the ATF (Mazda Type M5) instead but didn't get a sample during drain and fill. Darn.

Any guesses as to what fluid this is? I wonder if anyone can tell by additives. The dealer is Carmax so I would rule out OEM although you never know...

Looks like they may have used Quaker State 0w20. UOA looks good. Personally I'd never buy a vehicle from Carmax nor would I let them service it.

I think this oil had plenty left. The dealer didn't do everything right but this oil choice was a good move. I think after I'm out of warranty I'll start extending intervals esp. if I use something like M1 EP.

Not Kendall or Castrol Edge since no titanium.
Not Valvoline or NAPA since too little sodium.
Not Mazda branded oil since too little moly.
Not Mobil1 since Magnesium is too low.

Boron and Moly amounts are what it boils down to.
And I'd be suspicious that CarMax's bulk oil isn't really conventional dino 5w-20 here, just thinking.

Guessing its a Conoco-Phillips sourced bulk oil.

Agree re: MGMO as it's supposed to have hundreds of ppm of moly.

One of the reasons I drained oil is because something of incorrect grade might have been poured in. I'm sure 30 grade would have been fine but just in case there was a warranty claim...

QSUD 0w-20 doesn't have boron, and a lot more moly.
