Does anyone know what's the base oil on this? Canadian Tire has a sale for $26.99 and was curious if anybody has an idea if its a Group 3/PAO or PAO/Ester based.

I'm pretty sure its grp 4, I just bought $200 worth at Can tire this morning, its good stuff, run it in all 4 of my Audis and all the ones I service.

I just cashed in on that Canadian Tire sale as well. 26.99 for 5L of the Castrol 0W40 A3/B4 is a great deal. I service 7 vehicles (mostly German) for myself and my family, so I bought 9 jugs lol!!!

We still have the older Made in Belgium 0W40 up here, but it is essentially the same as the newer Made in Germany 0W40 that the US currently has on shelves. As far as I can tell, there were no formulation changes (i.e. it is still mostly PAO as indicated by the German Castrol website / PDS). It was strictly just a factory re-organization (0W30 A3/B4 moved from Germany to Belgium, and 0W40 A3/B4 moved from Belgium to Germany). It will take us years to get rid of the old stock up here, so hopefully Canadian Tire keeps having these sales

Excellent oil deal. 0W40 is much more oil than the 5w20/30 stuff they got on the shelf.

When Catrol changed factories and made the 0w40 in Germany and the 0w30 in Belgium, they started using titanium based additives.

Nickfresh. For some reason the 0w40 Castrol Edge available in Canada is made in
Belgium. Maybe it's older stock ?

Does it mention "Titanium" on the label? If not, it's probably older stock.

That's it then. I have two jugs of Castrol in front of me. One is 5w30 with the fancy picture with "Fluid Titanium Technology" on the bottle. The 0w40 has just Castrol Edge
and below that: Syntec "Power Technology".

This is what the newer titanium/made in Germany jugs look like, at least in the US. Not sure if it's any different north of the border...

That is the same as the 5w30 jug I have and all the other grades except the
0w40. I think the 0w40 grade is a slow mover up here. The other difference is that
our jugs are mostly 5 liters.

Some places, you'll see older stock. Sometimes, you'll come across newer stuff. As for jug sizes, don't forget that Wakefield uses those annoying 4.4 L jugs on occasion, like Imperial Oil.

Yes, you're right. What I meant to say in my last post was that I do not believe any "major" reformulations/changes were made (with respect to base stock, etc) after the factory swap. The 0W30 and 0W40 oils both still meet all relevant European specs, which would have required re-certification if major changes were made. They are also still considered full-synthetics as per German definitions, which implies (at minimum) a certain level of PAO content.

Both of the Euro Castrol products in question (0W30 / 0W40) contain a full SAPS additive package and a full detergent package as per the European specifications that they both meet. These oils are required to perform under extended drain intervals that are common in Europe.

Yes, how I love those 4.4L jugs

In my neck of the woods, I find that pretty much all of the black bottle Castrol syn products come in 5L containers, but the gold bottle Edge EP syns come in 4.4L jugs (and for a lot more money to boot)...

Same here, when it comes to the black and gold bottle sizes. The black bottles used to be more commonly found in 4.4 L jugs, too. I wish they'd all switch to 5 L jugs, or at least 5 U.S. quarts. Imperial Oil drives me nuts with that, too.
