So true.

Sometimes I like to see how far they'll go when I ask for spark plugs for my Cummins Ram, the right engine coolant for a '76 Beetle, and valve cover gaskets for a Mazda RX-7.

An irate son-of-a-female-dog came to the parts counter with a drive shaft yoke from an ancient English tractor.

I was working at a Dodge dealership parts counter at the time.

I asked him what the engine was (a 225 slant six), what the wheelbase was (110", I forget the car but I knew the number), auto or manual (answered auto)....Then I asked him what color it was.......

HE didn't think it was funny. Kira

On a separate note: Why can't I buy wiper refills anymore?

One favorite a while back...needed a water pump for a Cummins 12-valve. Told the dude the part number, he insisted he needed the vehicle. So I told him: 1979 F-350 4x4. He was very confused.

I was helping my uncle do some front U Joints in his Yuppy Jeep a few weeks back. His has front U Joints with 1-1/16 outer diameter instead of 1-3/16 outer diameter. We had to call around to various auto stores to find them.

Every.single.one asked if it was for a 4wd. They didn't even make a US Market 2WD wrangler back then ...

For what vehicle have you had issues finding refills, Kira? My preference is to refill the OEM blades as long as they perform well. The results have usually been much better than using aftermarket blade assemblies.

I buy them regularly. Got inserts for the GF's Lexus on Amazon from a Toyota dealer. I can buy PIAA inserts all day long on Amazon. Got a pair of silicon inserts (24", cut to fit) from Malaysia on eBay and they are proving to be excellent.

While it is nearly impossible to find them at retail, you can find inserts (refills) all over the place at dealerships and online.

Welllllllllll..... I can see why they'd have to ask. Why? Because sometimes people want more than one thing. If I ask about wiper blades and they assume automatic for the transmission, and then I ask about a transmission pan gasket for a manual or something, they have to back and start all over. Plus if they don't ask if it's FWD or AWD they'd also might get it wrong.

I try to clarify when I know something has different possibilities from the get go though. A 78 Dodge van I had, it had 3 or 4 possible rear brake drums. The front axel was one of three different possible ones too for brake parts, bearings, etc. Plus it could have been one of three different engines and 2 different possible A/Ts. Not to mention the rear axle was a full floating, non-dually Dana 60, not a Chrysler, so I had to order parts based on Dana 60, not a 78 Dodge B300. I replaced the damaged rear axle cover with one from a 1990ish Ford van in a junkyard that also had a Dana 60.

Toyota/Pontiac put two different 1.8L engines (1ZZFE, 2ZZGE) in the Matrix/Vibe, so you can't say "the 1.8L". Plus it could be FWD or AWD and could be M/T or A/T. The transmission shop I had mine serviced at, whoever they called to order the filter kit got it wrong (or the trans shop did, but that's a little less likely) and sent them presumably the AWD one, which of course wouldn't work with the FWD transmission. I had to wait an extra 30 minutes while they got the right one delivered.

Sometimes there are weird reasons for 2 variants of a car to have 2 unrelated parts that are different.

If you have a late version of Chevy S10, you need to know if it is a 2WD or 4WD version because the oil filter is different and so is the oil cooler. They both have the same 4.3 V6

My Vic calls for a different oil filter because it's a police model.

I recall that late 3rd V8 gen F-bodies also used 2 different oil filters, depending on whether they had the 1LE or WS6 packages and thus, an oil cooler.

I can't seem to find them at my local Walmart. I've been desperately hunting for refills for my MG, as I want to keep the factory chrome blades(plus the aftermarket Bosch blades I bought to tide me over didn't fit).

I've been meaning to order some from Amazon, but then I only drive the car in the rain if I get caught in it so it's not a high priority.

Glad to know that they work in a manual transmission

. Sometimes MT parts are hard to find these days

Toyota has taken to making trim-to-fit wiper refills. I think it's 26 inches long. Supposedly, this saves on packaging and makes inventory easier. One still must know their vehicle make/model/year, because there are several thicknesses of these inserts...
