Let turbo spin down at idle after driving?

The driving style generally will kill that car. Idling down after hard use in your brothers case will maybe have the turbo outlast the other problems that will crop up. Personally I think aggressive driving should be rewarded with expensive repairs.

Modern turbos do not require idle down because they continue to draw cooler coolant by convection designed in which it flows a tad.

My wife has a 190k 2005 Subaru with original turbo with a diet of non synthetic every 4K miles And NEVER has idled down. She drives like a normal person though into a driveway or parking lot after driving normally safely to the spot.

Nah its fine, those little baby turbo's spool down fast.

We do it all the time with trucks and equipment with larger turbos and they never blow.

Idling is a waste of time.

Turbocharged engines have been around for a very long time. No real special need for turbo cars when it comes to driving habits. Today's turbochargers are robust enough. Where people run into trouble is when they go into the car's programming and monkey around with settings and up the boost.
