For engine oil, I was put off by the 335i thread on here where the take home message was "if you have a BMW N54 engine it cooks oil and you will destroy the best synthetics in around 1000km". You can understand why cost may be an issue when facing such a ridiculous OCI. Turns out the thread is probably junk info but at the time I was taking it seriously and trying to get to the bottom of it all.
I have mentioned cost with these trans fluids as a way of perspective, honestly they're done so infrequently (~20-30,000km for me) that I don't mind what the cost is, I just want to use the best I can (as per first post). There's simply not much data on these fluids, I'm used to seeing VOA's, UOA's on here but there's hardly anything except anecdotal claims of better shifting etc with fluid X or Y.
