Seems odd BMW Motorsports endorses/uses an oil that doesn't have any Euro-specs. Pennzoil Ultra 0w-40. Great oil racing commercial though!

Well that is indeed interesting.

We know that the new BMW 0W-40 (and all BMW oils) are now made by Shell (Pennzoil) but are they saying the Pennzoil Euro 0W-40 which doesn't have BMW approval stated on the bottle (unless it has recently been updated) can also be used?
It's certainly cheaper than the BMW branded oil.

OMG a racing team using a non manufacturer approved oil in a modified engine being used in a condition not they were designed for, shocking.

What is funny is when the oil in a racecar is different than the oil that is sponsoring the racecar.

Also when the oil that's actually in the off-the-shelf bottle, is different than the off-the-shelf oil..

It's good marketing for the spectators that see them pouring in "the same" oil they can buy at Walmart..

The obvious answer is not to compete with the 0W-40 they make for BMW.

But what's stranger is that the PUP 0W-40 being poured into the BMW isn't even the Euro 0W-40 but the 0W-40 spec'd for Chrysler!

It would be interesting to see a VOA on the BMW brand 0W-40, PP Euro 0W-40 and the latest version of PUP 0W-40 to see how different the BMW oil is from these other 0W-40s.

It's obvious, but highly silly. Not everyone who owns a BMW goes to the dealer for service, or even has a dealer nearby. I would suggest it would be better for Pennzoil to compete with its own BMW branded product, rather than let Mobil and Castrol do it.

That's what I was getting at. Its the Chrysler SRT oil they're using in BMW's, NOT any euro-spec oil they make for BMW dealership or any other Euro formulas.
Notice how, in the picture in the first post, his thumb is strategically placed over the part of the bottle where they say SRT:

The PUP 0w-40 SRT oil has a high NOACK, too high for MB229.5, but it has a lot of moly, maybe better for the race team.

It probably is. They have used 0w-40's off the shelf in Indy (by rules requiring it) for years, so no problem. I would have guessed they would pick their Pennz Euro 5w-40 instead, since it carries LL-01 certification. There might have been something they really, really liked about the Chrysler SRT spec 0w-40 oil better.....

Can we infer that the most of the Euro car "specs" are probably just [censored]? I am sure the American oils are more than adequate for BMWs engines.

No, how did you come up with that conclusion?

The SRT oil replaced M1 0w-40 in the SRT lineup with the FIAT acquisition. It was basically a direct replacement for Mobil 1 0w-40, an oil which of course carries a pile of Euro OEM approvals. The one issue is the higher NOACK than the MB spec allows but other than that, you are basically looking at BMW using an oil very similar to M1 0w-40, which is, not surprisingly, also used by factory race teams from Porsche and Mercedes (along with many others).

That logic (for want of a better word) only works if the cars are painted black, and have slicks.

Euro specs are more like a HDEO than an S rated oil.

^^^Good points!

Is that pic of the U.S. based M Power Team, or the Euro based one?

With the exception of Sebring and Daytona, most of the races here are not really endurance length, but I believe that many in Europe are much longer.

Maybe that is why they are less concerned with NOACK, and more concerned with the add pack 'stoutness' (IF it is the U.S. based team in the pic)??

It's amazing the stories that we can make up to support our world view on a couple of advertising puff pieces that show oil being poured from a bottle into an engine.

One of the Oz V-8 supercar teams used to invite journalists to a test day, get them to buy a 5L jug of Havoline dino 20W50, then watch them pour the retail oil into the tank of their dry sump system...then go on the test day.

What did that say about the oil that they ran on race day, when it mattered, with their race engine...absolutely nothing.
