In February 2014 I had a leaking head gasket repaired (at 62k miles) and it alerted me to the fact that the engine is consuming oil, so I've been monitoring it fairly closely since then. I've always used M1 5W-30. Post head gasket repair I've tried three different oils:
M1 5W-30, 1350 miles/qt consumption
Amsoil 5W-30, 1250 miles/qt consumption
M1 10W-40 , 1200 miles/qt consumption

The owners manual says 1200 miles/qt is acceptable consumption. I have no leaks. I am thinking of going to a 0W-40 since I'll occasionally have starts in the -teens *f. What are your thoughts?

My suggestion would be a 5W-40 HDEO such as Rotella T6 or Delo 400 LE.

I use T6 (and occasionally T5) in our Subarus during the winter months.

Pennzoil High Mileage conventional 5W30. Between that and Max Life xW-30, my former 2000 Impreza RS never consumed more than half a quart during ~6k mile intervals. And stick with it for a couple of OCI's.
