The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting today that the Pep Boys auto store chain of some 800 stores is being sold to Bridgestone Tire for $835 million. Bridgestone currently operates Firestone Auto Centers.

Founded in Philly in 1921, the Pep Boys has seen its better days. Overexpansion in the 1980's and 1990's and poor management by the Pep Boy's later generations of the family, I feel, have led to this demise. Not to mention too many crummy looking stores and an abundance of poorly trained mechanics.

Could either be the end of clearance motor oil at the Pep Boys, or a whole new clearance sale opportunity.
