Ran the oil in my 97 Ranger 2.3 to 17,700 miles. Looking for advice on whether or not the oil is still fit for continued use. Thanks in advance.

Viscosity suggests this is too long. Wear metals do not.

No TBN?

Run it for another 7500 miles and report back.

Paid for THREE oil analysis and never changes the oil. Could have changed the oil three times and engine would have been much happier. I will never understand this sight sometimes.

Agreed.

Well, someone's gotta do it to provide the data for everyone else.

183K miles on an 18yr old truck is not exactly the short end of the stick. And it's still going.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum changing out M1 in 1 yr on

Thank you OP for the data. I have a couple questions...

1- are you sure it was 5W20 ? It had the viscosity of 5W30 at the first sample (1800 miles into oci) and no way it oxidized that much in so few miles. Since it seems to be a 30 grade, not such bad thickening.

2- how much make up oil was added? Seems like there had to be a quart or two and it would be good info as to when it was added.

Thanks again...it's good info and if you could supply makeup oil info...all the better.

Edit-since you asked...I personally would drain now, based on the oxidation. This was an impressive run anyway. If you've been adding makeup all along, then I don't see any harm here.

The oxidation could be the reason the oil is thickening. TBN is a must though.

Sure the oxidation is causing thickening as it seems okay otherwise, but it started as a 30 grade and while thicker, it's still just a 30. Either the OP made a typo or the wrong product was in the bottles.

It looks fantastic to me and if there were a few quarts of makeup oil, then TBN was probably fine. No corrosion of bearings showing up.

Well he has set his trend and can now do 15k OCI's And sleep well at night. I think this is prefect. He won't have to do any more UOA's. Good work!

It's not all about money savings. It's a hobby as well, seeing how long the oil can go, and like someone already mentioned proving UOA data.
