I am NOT making this up:

Communications by Gas.

And it may well be viable.

They already talk to pigs in the pipe lines while they are working. I wonder if the pig could become an intelligence agent sending secret messages here and there.

When I was in school a friend had the job of chasing lost and stuck pigs and marking their location with a stake and a flag to be restarted or retrieved. This was before cell phones and satellite communications existed. You could hit the pipe with a hammer and someone way down the line could hear the noise if a pig was not in the way. I guess that in 50 years or so that communications have improved a bit.

I thought using the gas pipe as a waveguide made a lot of sense.

Multiplex digital waveforms on the carrier and you have a wideband transmission system.

No mention in the article as to how it could effect cathodic protection systems of NG lines or vice versa.

Great, in the future my TV will be plugged into my natural gas line. I can just imagine the explosion when there's a leak and a spark inside the TV happens ... LOL!
