Wasn't sure where to posts this. I have a Mazda/Ford fusion 2.3 engine with a separate engine oil cartridge filter housing.
I wanted to take a sample of the oil from the engine pan but I was busy being angry and fuming I forgot to do it. Is it ok if I take an oil sample from the oil filter housing?
It has a bolt there for draining the oil, the filter itself looks very clean.

And when you change it the next time, consider a Fumoto drain valve on the pan in place of drain plug. I use them on vehicle and equipment I have. Nice way to get a catch without any kind of spillage.

This is how I do it.

Open the valve and drain about 1/2 the used oil. Shut the valve and position the sample bottle under it, then partially open the valve to fill the sample bottle. After collecting the sample, finish draining the oil.

This method is going to yield about the best quality of sample available.
