I am looking for a state to spend the cold winter months as close to nj as possible i don't like the cold but have my roots and business here so i can't be to far away.. I will settle for 20 degrees warmer on the average just for say Dec. through Feb.
It has to be a nice area any ideas?

Going to have to go several states south - at least SC - to get 20 degrees warmer on average. GA, AL and MS would be good as well, but SC is closest to NJ.

No such thing as 20 degrees warmer and close.

I know the winters can sometimes be bad, but I still go to Atlantic City in the middle of the winter and just stay inside one of the huge casino hotel complexes and wear shorts and pretend it's summer (easy enough to to in the Trop) for a couple of days.

Id look down the 301 corridor, somewhere between southern MD and Richmond. If you get far enough south in MD, you can get away from DC prices...

Ive been in 30 degree weather in TX and AL. It snows in FL now and again.

If youre set on that, your only choice, IMO is someplace like Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas, LA/SD, maybe bay area.

Many of those will have similar costs of living and tax structures to NJ. Others will have severe downsides wrt water, heat, crime, etc.

I get it not wanting to see extreme cold, but at 30F Ill still wear shorts in some circumstances. 30F isnt cold unless idle outside for long periods and/or very windy. Not wanting to see 15 or lower I get.

But if you want to get back, I still say the 301 corridor south of Annapolis/DC and north of Richmond. Its not too killer of a drive, you have multiple route options, it gets warmer as you go south, its relatively near water which helps temper things a bit, etc.

The best weather of all lower 48 states is San Diego. The weather in Orange County, CA isn't bad but San Diego is better. It isn't as hot in summer and not so cold(or should I say cool ?). We think anything below 60F is too cold, we have sweater on when temperature drops below 70, below 60 we have jacket on when we go out, below 50 we stay indoor if we must go out then heavy jacket is needed.

In San Diego you don't need A/C in summer and rarely need to turn on furnace in winter if you live within 5-10 miles from the beach. The air is very clean not like LA, not as much rain and cold as in Bay Area.

The problem is very high housing cost and water is a scared resource.

20°F warmer is A LOT. Second, no colder than 30°F will also be tough, given your location restriction. Even here in CenTx, we'll get a front that will drop us below freezing for a week or so. The teens though are very, very rare.

What area does your wife like ?

Here we got 65 degree winters, 40's at night then warms up quickly as the sun rises.

Well, Puerto Rico and the USVI are relatively close to NJ compared to Hawaii, and are still part of the USA. I think it'll be thousands of years before those spots are likely to see winter temperatures below 30°F.

What's the coldest it will ever get in a place like Brownsville (the Tejas one)?

The record low for Brownsville is 15°F 0n 12/20/1901

I grew up in Corpus Christi & finished college in Kingsville.

I've seen it get in the teens record is 13°F on 12/23/89, while I was living there.
