2007 Mustang 4 liter V6,auto tranny,127,000 miles.

We drove up to Ft Worth to look at a house. On the way back driving through Hillsboro, the car started "bucking" suddenly (@70mph in overdrive) and making a rattling sound under the transmission tunnel. The rpms suddenly went to around 3500 and wouldn't accelerate. I pulled off the highway at a hotel and stopped. I shifted in park, then reverse, and back in drive with no weird noises. So I turned O/D off on the shifter and it drove perfect without an ounce of trouble all the way home, until we were about a block from our house. It started slipping and making a weird "dry squealing" sound. We made it into our driveway (thank goodness!).

Time for a new transmission? :^( Can't believe an 07 car with only 127,000 miles already needs a new transmission. My dad's 90 Delta 88 didn't lose it's transmission till a little over 450,000 miles.

Depends on failed component. Ive seen perfectly good and modded transmissions fail because of a bad sensor or solenoid.
You also have the normal automaker engineering defects.

What fluid/filter and maintenance history?

Had a tranny service (fluid/filter replacement/etc) done at Ford a month or so ago because it was making a whining sound in overdrive under light load. After the service, the noise completely went away,BUT,came back a few days ago. Was it already on its way out?

Yes, I'm sure the dealer ruined it... BITOG skeptics at their finest.

It's one of those pieces of [censored] that has no normal fill/drain plug and no dipstick. It's got one of those weird drain/fill combo thingies on the bottom that required a Ford attachment that works with their machines. I actually looked into buying the attachment but the job looked to be way over my head.

Uh, no? Maybe you've forgotten but we are all human. Humans can easily make mistakes. It doesn't matter that this was a dealership, it could have been the greatest transmission shop in the world. I would have asked the same question.

Sounds like it was on its way out...

Human? Lately I've gotten the impression that nearly all BITOG members are super genius know it all pro level mechanics who believe that all dealers and indy shops are staffed by [censored], clowns, freaks, thieves, thugs, dullards and lawyers (for good measure) who are so completely inept that their simply checking the air in your tires will either result in A) A fiery crash, or B) A blatant attempt to up sell you something at gross/huge profit.

If that's not you, then my apologies.

Lol no not me. I don't have a problem with dealers. Most of my experiences with dealers has been great. Although last year they scammed me out of almost $2,000 for a flywheel for my VW. But that's just one dealer, not saying all are like that.

If this was the first time the tranny was serviced, the damage was probably already done. Also, a tranny built in 2007 was built for eficiency, unlike one built in 1990 which was probably a tank.

This is what I was thinking. Seems as soon as this car hit 100,000 miles it started falling to pieces. Transmission started whining and would "clunk" loudly going into reverse, idler pulley fell off on her way home from work on day, front suspension started rattling, had to replace all the rotors, turning signals fell out of the front facia, stereo went dead, the interior is falling to pieces, all the paint literally baked off the entire rear bumper. So far that's all I can think of.

I hate the fact that you cannot check the transmission fluid levels on a lot of these newer cars. My 2014 Mustang GT has an automatic tranny and sometimes when it is hot, it feels like the trans slips a little bit. It also doesn't have a dipstick and the dealer wants $135 just to check the fluid level because they have to hook it up to a scanner to make sure the trans is at the correct temperature to check the fluid level.

Still under warranty? Document your complaint to them and when it grenades, remind them of what you asked them to do to protect themselves as well as you.

Won't a lot of OBDII code readers give you the transmission temperature???

That and it could be the TPS.

Don't automatically assume that it's the transmission. My 1995 Escort still has it's original 1995 automatic transmission with over 230K miles on it.

If the most recent service was its first, it was probably on its way out already.

Ford 4R/5R transmissions like regular fluid changes from new. My truck has a related, but older version of this transmission. 5-speeds, but it has a normal dipstick and normal service procedures. At 175K miles it shifts perfect, but it has had regular fluid changes since new.

It is still under warranty and I did voice my concern when I was at the dealer asking how much they charge to check it. He told me to just enjoy the car and if it gets really bad to bring it in. Car only has about 14,600 miles on it and I don't beat on it. It might just be a characteristic of these modern automatics since my newest car before this one was a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo.
