I bought this car with a wierd issue with the motor, had severe hesitation, kind of like it was running on 3 cylinders.

I've owned dozens of VW's over the years, but this is my first TDI.

Good friend told me what it probably was, but I didn't know it would be this bad...

Here are some photos of the damage:

I think this happens most often from people putting non-spec oil in these motors, which require VW 505.01 minimum...

Going forward I will make sure to use the appropriate oil, still not 100% on which one to use, I bought Pentosin Performance II 5w-40, but holy [censored] it's expensive... list is $143, I got it for $85 for a 5L (1.32gal).

You basically need a thick diesel oil.

If it was mine I'd use a spec oil or any HDEO 5w40

Right on.

VW/Audi + TDI is simply too demanding on oil qaulities.

Do consider synthetics , of appropriate VW approvals.

Yep I already have a jug of Pentosin 5W40 that meets 501.01 spec, however it's $85CDN per jug and I'm wondering if I can get something a bit cheaper with the same qualities on monday (Nothing was open today, being Saturday)

M1 ow-40 and castrol 0w-40 can usually be found on sale somewhere. They both are certified.

An hdeo might work however I don't think they carry approvals.

You can use these in diesels? I thought those oils were for gasoline engines...

Yep there is a proper spec for a proper reason.... Fine German engineering!.Probably better than a HEUI setup.

VWs and AUDIs are doing great in EU...they overseas just dont have "up to date/up to the job" oils....and fuels

does the Pentosin come wrapped in a gift box at that price?

Off topic- are Toyotas that picky about oil? All the "3rd world" unrest/riot videos I see the trouble makers are always driving Toyota trucks, I doubt they have time to seek out a specific oil grade.

Edit: In Malaysia RON 95 is still Euro II todate at 500 ppm sulphur. So were RON97 and Diesel

were Euro II until August 2015.After September 1, 2015 Diesel Euro 4/5 is available only at

selected fuel stations.

Whoa! M1 0w-40 or Castrol 0w-40 from Walmart are much cheaper, and Delvac 1 from Imperial Oil is under $30 a jug.

Yes, greg, those two options are suitable for diesels, particularly those for which they are specified.

Only appropriate oil for PD (pumpe duse) engine is that certified with 505.01 or later 504/507 (LOW SAPS) spec.

http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php

At least for 505.01 I have heard that contains special AW additive in it....that makes oil more "stay put"....and makes oil film stronger

That is important at start up of the engine because high amount of force is aplied on injectors by camlobes.....and if "regular" non 505.01 oil is used in PD engine that oil creeps away when car is not in use.....and that promote long term wear of PD lifters little by little every start up after start up of that engine.

It happens to them regardless of what oil you use, but of course the proper oil helps it last longer. It doesn't have to be a 505.01 oil. Plenty of people use Rotella T6 or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck and have great results.

With the BEW engine do NOT use Mobil 1 0w40. It's not up to the task. It's perfectly fine in the ALH engines though.

Don't use a 507 oil either. They're 5w30 which is too thin.

My TDI has a cam that's going bad, I've had enough of VW. It really put a sour taste in my mouth and it'll be sold soon. Back to drama-free Toyota!

Valvoline 5w40 MST is a 505.01 oil, and it might cost less than Pentosin.

Some people have suggest M1 0w40, but don't use it in a VW PD engine. M1 0w40 doesn't meet VW 505.01, and that means it doesn't work with PD engines.

I returned the Pentosin today... still on the search!

Total Quartz 9000, at under $40CDN at our Euro parts supply warehouse, is less than half the price. They say that pretty much all repair shops in town use it for TDI's.. he didn't mention that it is only 505.00 spec though!!

I was adamant that I wanted 505.01 spec oil, and now researching (always do before buying!) I find it is 505.00 only...

These are long-time VW and Euro supply people, wouldn't they know or care about the difference between 505.00 and 505.01? Or like everyone I've talked to in person, it's all about the $$$ paid for endorsements?

OP , go find this VW 505.01 :TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-40

Or this : Castrol EDGE 5W-40
