"Concerns over technology changes and back serviceability for PC-11
After Ford raised a concern about 0.08% phosphorus oils earlier this year, there has been no broad debate within industry to discuss this topic. Many OEMs want to see significant field data before allowing reduced phosphorus oils or plan to develop their own valve train wear tests.

Others are less concerned as long as lubricant formulations can pass the industry engine tests. What does seem to be universal is that none of the HDD OEMs we have spoken to feel that the API S claim should be a driver for new HDD engine oils. Some OEMs are also working to allow some backward serviceability for the new PC-11 B low viscosity engine oils.

The precision and BOI matrices on the T-13 and C-13 Aeration tests (now officially called Volvo T-13 and COAT) were completed, their data reviewed, and both have been unanimously accepted as being ready for PC-11 testing by the NCDT.

The API Lubes Group is currently balloting the recommendation by its BOI/VGRA Task Force to allow Group II to Group II base oil interchange in both tests. The Task Force is also developing a testing matrix to support VGRA in both tests for the SAE 10W-30, 10W-40 and 15W-40 grades."
