OEM lubricants specifications aside , looking strictly at ambient temperatures and viscosity

grade of oils , I would consider your point of straight weight SAE30/SAE40 of comparable quality

(which should incur lower production costs)as being very valid in tropics like Malaysia year

round whereby :-

a )lowest ambient in the dark is 24C;

b )highest ambient in the day is 33 - 35(rarely) degrees celsius; and

c )cold start in the morning at around 27 - 29C ambient.

But alas........... as pointed out by several revered posters in Bitog here , our final

'selection' of oils is largely determined by oil companies/blenders/stockists ............

instead of site-specific engineering requirements.

It crosses my mind , insignificant consumers like us are paying for additional costs incurred in

manufacturing 0W,5W,10W etc...... which our tropical climates doesn't need.

actrually, from the explanation the original poster gave, you get the same viscsity and basestock ranges as we do in Europe. So that tells me you probably get whatever is available as a surplus, but nothing is specifically develloped for your market. Besides labels and marketing campaigns that is...

If I was there, I'd look at Elf Molygraphite if the price is right... that isn't available here...
