Can anyone explain if the base oils made for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum are of the same as type 4 oils called PAO? Are they actually group 4 oils or is there now some new category?

Are they as pure and homogenous as the best base oils made from Ethylene?

Are their essential properties as good as PAO? Or is that is too subjective, how do their relevant qualities differ from PAO/Ester type 4/5 base oils?

And lastly, does Shell (who reportedly makes them) now use these Natural Gas derived base oils for their 'Fully Synthetic' oils?

Thanks. That answered the question of what type of base oil it is, - Group 3.

It didn't really answer any of the other questions though. I was hoping for some insight from an unbiased oil engineer or chemist about the relative properties of the base oils.

I can't say much about everything else but according to their videos describing their gas to liquid process it's supposedly a pure synthetic base oil that is 99.5% pure which is purer than anything else out there.

Their GTL base oils are about as good as anything. Some of the NOACK numbers from testing are hard to beat by any Group IV PAO. Why pay more?
