I'll be taking a 5 hour road trip to Montreal with the wife this weekend. Does anybody have any recommendations of places to visit or a good restaurant etc? Neither of us has ever been to the city. We'll be staying at a hotel 10 minutes away from downtown.
Thanks in advance.

Agree on Dunn's.

Actually some of the best North American "Chinese" food Ive ever had was in the little Chinatown in downtown Montreal.

It appears Dunn's has three locations. Does anybody know which location is the original? In my experiences, when famous restaurants expand to multiple locations, the original retains the "greasy spoon" atmosphere while the new locations have a franchised look.

I lIved there for 26 years. I preferred Schwartz on St Laurent. Best smoke meat. The original. Also try the real Montreal bagels. Then walk around downtown and see the French "joie de vivre"! And all the eye candy...and the casino! Enjoy.

Hi,

The original doesnt exist anymore. Dunns left and came back is the reason why. Right now the one located on Metcalfe is the one in the downtown core. I know one of the others is on the south shore. On boulevard st laurent i would recommend Schwartz's..old jewish smoked meat location. Also go try our bagels..very different from ny bagels! St viateur and fairmont bagel shops. Lots of bars and restaurants..you can also go to Mont Royal (weather supposed to be nice) if you like going for a hike or walk visit the old port also lots to eat, drink and visit. Chinatown also worth a visit though i have had better food elsewhere. La Belle Province is a good spot to have a poutine..or go to la banquise..famous for poutines..fries gravy and cheese, can really order more varities that include hot dogs, smoked meat etc.

You can go to the casino for an evening, heard their food is good but cant confirm..what hotel are you staying at? Biosphere, Olympic Stadium, Biodome, botanical gardens.. if you like beer they are having a beer festival in a city on the south shore called Chambly. Guess it depends how old you are and what you both enjoy doing.

And since your first time coming here, alot of ppl speak english in downtown area!

Whatever you do, just make sure you don't make a right turn on a red light. It's against the law on the Island of Montreal. Bring extra money, the gas is expensive. ;-P.

Good points! Gas currently 1.17/per liter multiply by 3.8 and you can calculate per gallon cost..though with the exchange rate it wont bother you much..

If you like old world buildings, Notre Dame has to be one of the most beautiful churches. Molson's used to offer a tour as well.

A walk down by the St. Lawrence is pretty nice there too.

We stayed right on the edge of Chinatown last summer and Notre Dame was probably the highlight of our visit.
Went to explore the underground city, but it was kind of a bust as it happened to be Canada Day and much of it was closed. When we went back to street level, it was pouring rain. :^(
Our trip to the old Olympic site was pretty good, toured the Biodome and rode up to the top of the stadium tower. Actually visited this place long ago when the Expos still lived there...

I used to live in the west island (DDO). I definitely cast my vote for Schwartz's deli. Take the metro to St. Laurent and when you get out of the station, go up St. Laurent, up the hill. Bring cash! Schwartz's does not take credit cards. The place is small - when I would go during F1 weekend, the line to get in would extend out to the sidewalk, but it's definitely worth it!

A French engineer buddy who works for "HAL" took his NY registered car up there and they pretended not to understand him. He said..."I speak better French than they do".

I was working at the GM plant years ago, in St Terease. I was stopped at a sobiity check point one night. The police played like they couldn't speak english. But they sure knew how to say blow in english.
