Hello BITOG Members:

Thank you all so much for participating in last week’s Q&A with Shanna Simmons. You guys are good and came through with some great questions! We hope our answers regarding engine protection have helped put several myths to rest.

We are now entering the second week of Q&A sessions, and we’re excited to get started working on your inquiries. This week, you’ll have the opportunity to submit inquiries to Mark Ferner, Project Manager, regarding valve train and timing chain wear as it pertains to motor oil/lubrication. Mark boasts 26 years of technical R&D and operational leadership experience supporting lubricants technology and fuels technology with his mechanical engineering degree from Florida International University. Mark is also an ASE certified mechanic but his current project is a 1970 Corvette Stingray (the engine, suspension and brakes are all refreshed and performance modified. Next up, power steering!)

Beginning with this post, a new thread has been opened for you to submit your questions. The thread will be open for question submissions from 9:00 a.m. ET Saturday, August 29th until 5:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 1st, at which time Mark and our full team of scientists and engineers will work together to provide answers to your questions to be posted on Friday, September 4th.

As mentioned before, we have a few notes to make sure the Q&A flows smoothly:

1. Please use this thread only to submit questions.
2. Please understand that there will be some questions that we will not be able to answer. We cannot divulge any proprietary information and can only speak from our areas of expertise.
3. Mark and team will also not be commenting or speculating on the products of our competitors.

With that, let Week #2 begin!

What do you consider the major source of oil shear in an engine? Does the length of timing chain have any relevancy to shearing of oil. Twin cams vs Sohc and shear?

As fuel economy standards increase, resulting in the push toward lower viscosities (thinner oil films), and greater use of Direct Injection with particulate generation problems, what motor oil formulation changes will allow for lowering wear & friction in cams, lobes, and timing chain pins? As in, for GF-6 and dexos-2016.

Has Pennzoil done ASTM WK49675 or similar testing with an older ASTM timing chain wear standard on Pennzoil motor oils? IF so, can you share the results of those tests?

Can you share the results of the valve train wear tests the Pennzoil motor oils have been subjected to?

On your website, there is an oil selector page

http://lubematch.pennzoil.com/recommenda...8&brand=121

You don't yet show a recommendation for my vehicle, a 2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited with the normally-aspirated FB25 engine. Likely because this model year of the vehicle has only recently gone on sale.

However, for the MY2015 version of my vehicle with the same engine, this oil selector page generates only one recommendation, the Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20. Notably, the Ultra 0w-20 is NOT shown as a recommendation. Is this an oversight, or is there something in or not in the Ultra that makes its use not suitable for the FB25 engine?

From your research regarding valve train and timing chain wear.
Has synthetic oil been proven to provide better wear protection vs. using conventional oil in the same application ?

Thank you for your questions. We will post the answers ASAP.
