TL;DR :

1qt - Total Quartz 5w30 502/505.01
5qts - Total Quart 5w30 504/507

Can they be mixed?

----------------------

So I'm an idiot and bought the wrong oil on amazon. I bought total quartz ineo long life 5w30. I meant to buy the MC3 version. The 5qt jug is 504/507. My car takes 6 quarts and I already have 1 quart of the MC3 version in 5w30 which is 502.00/505.01 (mid saps).

I've run a 504/507 previously so I'm not worried about tbn over a 5k highway oci...but can I add in the mc3 to make it a 6 even quarts? I could return the 5qt for a new one, but incur a $10 return fee + the additional cost of the MC3 oil.

I think VW 504/507 spec oils have better TBN retention than mid and high saps oils. I did a 5K UOA using Pennzoil Euro L in my GTI. The TBN dropped to 3.4 which was okay for a 5K interval.
It's critical you document and retain your oil & filter changes for your car.

Double check in your manual but being in the US you will be on fixed interval servicing. Just use the longlife oil for one interval and then change over to a different oil.

5w-40 VW502.00 is the best oil for fixed interval on these engines (officially).

So at 5k miles I went with PUE L for 5k oci for mitigating carbon deposits. I was monitoring your "low-saps" posts and decided to switch to M1 0w40 at my 10k oil change. I then decided for warranty purposes I could run 502/505.01 mid-saps and still be ok. I accidentally bought the 504/507 the other day and have decided to just order one (1) $16 quart of the 504 and not mix these oils. I most likely won't fully switch to 504 oils until powertrain warranty runs out.

I mean, you said you have 5qt of VW 504.00. Just used it. Cut OCI a little bit, do not waste oil.
I personally would not mix it since additives are different.

I did end up buying 1qt of the 504 for this oil change. I saw the TBN of this total 504 starts at 6.2, which seems sufficient for 5k miles. I drive mostly highway so I think I'll be good.

I would mix a 229.52 newer Mercedes application mid saps oil with the 507 spec rather than older VW specification. I mixed Mobil 1 5w30 esp with 0w30x1esp which is 229.52 oil-there is virgin oil analysis on here. Uses higher calcium additives but otherwise is close to 5w30. Maybe placebo but seemed to help cold starts in winter when used them together.
